CORRECTION (Jan. 8, 2020, 12:49 p.m. ET): An earlier version of this article miscalculated the size of the 2019 California wildfires in relation to the size of the Australian wildfires. The Australian wildfires are 6,400 times the size of California's, not 80.

Also, an earlier version of the interactive map displaying the aggregate size of the wildfires misrepresented the size of the wildfires. The radius of the circle representing the wildfires is 101 miles, not 57 miles.

CORRECTION (Jan. 8, 2020, 3:03 p.m. ET): An earlier version of the interactive map would miscalculate the size of Australia's wildfires compared to a U.S. city. The comparison uses a logarithmic scale, not a linear scale. The map has been fixed.
