Mark Cuban to Redskins owner Dan Snyder after sexual harassment report: ‘Accept the mistakes you made’ - The Dallas Morning News

Almost 2.5 years ago, Sports Illustrated published a report detailing allegations of sexual harassment and improper behavior on the business side of the Mavericks’ organization.

Owner Mark Cuban still feels remorse and responsibility.

That’s what prompted Cuban to offer advice about acknowledging mistakes to NFL owner Dan Snyder.

The Washington Post on Thursday published an in-depth report about the culture of sexual harassment and verbal abuse — not unlike the findings of the Mavericks’ investigation — by members of Snyder’s inner circle and longtime Washington football personnel employees during most of Snyder’s tenure.

Reacting in real time Thursday night during his “Ask Me Anything with Mark Cuban” radio show on SiriusXM, Cuban hoped his message would reach Snyder.

“If you know Dan Snyder, if you’re involved with the Redskins, if you connect to them, tell Dan and tell his senior management you’ve got to just recognize what you did right and what you did wrong,” Cuban said. “You have to accept the mistakes you made. That’s painful. I made a lot of mistakes. And that’s the only way this is going to get resolved.”

Since the allegations against Mavericks business staffers were made public in February 2018, the franchise has made tangible efforts to improve.

Cynt Marshall joined the organization as chief executive officer soon after and has restored a positive, inclusive culture, Cuban has said.

A year after the Sports Illustrated report, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Cuban was “absolutely meeting his commitments” to pledging $10 million to women’s organizations that combat domestic violence and support the leadership and development of women.

“At least what was reported directly to me and through the organization,” Silver said at the time, “is that it was a complete sea change in culture on the business side with the Mavericks, that Cynthia Marshall was getting the highest possible grades, along with the new senior management team that she brought in.”

Cuban addressed the Washington Post report at the end of his show.

He recalled receiving a phone call from a reporter who said: “Guess what? We’ve got women who work for you who say that they’ve been sexually harassed over a period of many years.”

“Literally, I started crying,” Cuban said. “I was so upset.”

Snyder released a three-paragraph statement Friday about his commitment to “setting a new culture” in the first season with head coach Ron Rivera and the organization’s hiring of a law firm “to do a full, unbiased investigation and make any and all requisite recommendations.”

“Now, the reality is,” Cuban said, “the Dallas Mavericks in 2018 went through the exact same thing.”
