Nearly two-dozen Valley nonprofits will share approximately $257,000 in grants from the Valley United Way, designed to help them stay afloat during the coronavirus pandemic.
“Valley United Way’s goal is to develop and organize direct financial and other support, to help meet the identified needs of the five communities in the Lower Naugatuck Valley in partnership with local agencies,” Valley United Way board of directors Chairman Michael Gnibus said in a release. “The three broad areas that this funding supports include preparing youth to succeed, strengthening families and helping people in crisis.”
VUW’s grants come at an especially critical time, as many of the nonprofits are expecting additional financial challenges as the pandemic continues to have a ripple effect on the local economy, according to Gnibus.
“Despite its own financial challenges from coronavirus, Valley United Way’s Board of Directors made a courageous decision to keep the FY 20-21 funding total level with FY 19-20’s, given the pressing needs of partner agencies and those they serve,” Gnibus said.
Funding for these grants is possible through VUW workplace campaigns and community fundraising efforts, according to VUW Interim President David Kennedy, with its largest supporters including BIC Corp., Edgewell Personal Care, Griffin Hospital, Hubbell Inc., Iroquois Pipeline, Prudential Financial and Webster Bank.
“Valley United Way is proud to continue supporting a superb network of 17 Valley nonprofits with expertise in providing health, social service and youth services to families throughout our five-town area,” Kennedy said. “Of course, that network would not be possible without the exceptional financial support that United Way receives annually from corporations and businesses, their employees and hundreds of individual donors.”
Shaye Roscoe, CEO of the Lower Naugatuck Valley Boys & Girls Club, was grateful for the $66,250 award that entity received.
“There are no words that can truly express our sincere gratitude to David Kennedy, the board of directors and the Allocation Committee for their generous support of our organization and the members we serve,” Roscoe said. “We are so humbled to have been selected as a recipient for this allocation knowing that there were many qualified applications and it was a very difficult year.”
The Housatonic Council Boy Scouts of America received $22,100, which Scout Executive John A. Zseller II said “will provide necessary resources for membership supplies, program supplies, camp maintenance and general support” for Valley boys and girls ages 5 to 18.
Sarah Beard, director of Children’s Services for BHcare’s Parent Child Resource Center, which provides services for children, teens and families struggling with emotional and behavioral issues, said the $26,900 grant it received will go a long way.
“We are very grateful to the Valley United Way for this allocation,” Beard said. “The past several months have been especially difficult for children and families, experiencing social isolation, stress and anxiety. And, the planned return to school in the fall will pose additional challenges for children. Over the next several months, our work will focus on helping children get back to their age appropriate development with confidence and a sense of security.”
