FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - The non-partisan voter advocacy group Count US IN is taking their work all the way to the White House fighting for disability rights.
Jalyn Radziminski began her non-profit Count US IN and she says she never dreamed she would make it all the way to Washington D.C.
Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris invited her to be a part of a small panel discussion about voting rights for people with disabilities.
"I definitely had to calm myself down, I was so excited to be there,” she said. “It was very powerful to be at the table with her, talking about voter rights, especially for disability and BIPOC communities.”
Vice President Harris talked about the need to address rights of people with disabilities with a small group of activists from across the U.S.
“Thank you to all of the leaders who have convened today, you represent the experience and life of so many Americans whose lives need to be represented,” Vice President Harris said. “I shared my personal experience, and my experience advocating in the community. You really see that voting is a big issue because it really impacts our lives.”
Radziminski says she got to share her experience advocating for disability rights and for the issues of people here in Fort Wayne.
“I spoke on my personal struggles and my ability being able to vote, and the issues in Fort Wayne,” she said. “There’s so many barriers that need to be addressed, that will not only help people in the disability community, but everyone's ability to vote.”
She says it should be easier for people with disabilities to vote.
Radziminski suggests making no-excuse absentee ballots, better access to polling locations and more education about voting changes each year.
She says other issues include voter registration barriers, technology problems and poll worker training.
"It was really neat to meet her and hear about how she’s trying to build these bipartisan efforts to help people across the country,” she said. “To tell the Vice President, this is what happened to me, this is what’s happening to my community, and this is why I created Count Us IN.”
Radziminski says Vice President Harris is asking for people across the U.S. to share their experiences voting.
She says you can submit a comment on this website that will help analyze the barriers to voting for people with disabilities.
