The Lemon Grove School District governing board expects to appoint a new member at the end of August to finish the term of board President Larry Loschen.

Loschen announced his resignation in late June, with his final date of service effective July 7. His seat runs through Nov. 8, 2022.

The board last week unanimously voted to hold interviews of prospective candidates at its Aug. 24 meeting. The district will accept applications of those interested in the seat through Aug. 5. Application packets are available online at lemongrovesd.net or at the district’s office at 8025 Lincoln St.

The board said it did not want to spend six figures on a special election.

“If I could choose between the two and it didn’t cost so much to hold a special election, I would rather leave it up to the voters,” said Board Vice President Cheryl Robertson, who was elected to a four-year term last November. “But I don’t think its justifiable to spend $150,000 and take that money from the kids, especially when another election is going to happen in a year anyway.”

The board said it will allow all eligible candidates an opportunity to weigh in at the Aug. 24 meeting.

“This is a really big decision,” said Lemon Grove School Board member Greg Shibley, who last November beat out April Leon by 11 votes for a two-year term on the board. “It’s the kind of thing that under normal circumstances, upwards of 15,000 people would weigh in. In this case, it’s going to be four, so there’s a lot on our shoulders to get things right.”

The vote for the person to fill the seat must be made by a majority of the current board. If the board is unable to take action, the County Superintendent of Schools shall call an election to fill the vacancy, according to the state education code.

The board’s Aug. 24 public meeting will be held at 5 p.m. and will be in-person at the Lemon Grove Library’s community room at 3001 School Lane. The board has not met in person since COVID-19 pandemic health orders from the county nixed public gatherings in March 2020.

Applications for the school board seat are due by 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5. Qualified applicants must be registered voters and a resident of the school district.

The district website said that the appointment is considered a provisional appointment, but that it “confers all powers and duties upon the appointee immediately following the appointment.” It says that unless a petition calling for a special election is filed with the County Superintendent of Schools within 30 days after the date of the provisional appointment, it shall become an effective appointment.
