Trinidad Art Gallery is featuring two of its members — woodworker Tom Kingshill and watercolorist Maureen McGarry — throughout July.
McGarry primarily paints local landscapes and is also a longtime art teacher, primarily teaching children in local schools. She has received a number of California Arts Council grants to help her reach out with her art instruction. This season, these funds have enabled her to teach watercolor techniques online with seniors.
“In the midst of producing artwork for the gallery during the pandemic,” McGarry said, “I found myself painting glimpses of the ocean through the obstruction of the many rocks and boulders prevalent on our northern California shoreline. Our view narrows through the hardness, but we do see through to the openness of the ocean and the endless sky. We have all been through some difficult times. I am hopeful we are finally making it through to a calmer sea.”
Kingshill is inspired by the great variety of wood in our surrounding landscape. He uses foraged sections of local trees and with a lathe creates decorative vessels for the home. He specializes in natural-edge bowls.
These vessels challenge the artist to practice a fine-tuned discernment of design while leaving the edge of the piece naturally wild. The elements of smooth, machine-like precision and natural, raw undulations of the untamed surface of a tree come together to form an utterly unique bowl. His pieces always showcase the unique characteristics and grain patterns of his found wood.
On July 31, the gallery will be joining with the rest of Trinidad to celebrate Trinidad Art Nights from 5 to 9 p.m. This is the 10th year of this event, and the timing has been changed to the last Saturday of each month: July, August, September and October.
The Trinidad Art Gallery is located 490 Trinity St. COVID-19 precautions are in place. An artist will be on duty at the gallery. For more information, call 707-677-3770 or visit trinidadartgallery.com.
