'I don't know how you come back from this': Troy Aikman calls out Cowboys players, coaches - The Dallas Morning News

It feels like it was so long ago that the Cowboys were 3-0 on the season with high postseason aspirations.

Now more than two months later and with just three games left in the season, the Cowboys are 6-7 and have just suffered their third straight loss, this one by a score of 31-24, which indicates the game was much closer than it actually was.

After the game, Cowboys legend Troy Aikman didn’t pull any punches when evaluating his former team in the broadcast booth.

“I don’t know how you come back from this. I really don’t,” Aikman said. "For the last two weeks, we’ve heard from them that they are going to get it going. They had a chance at home against the Buffalo Bills to finally beat a team with a winning record. That didn’t happen. They got embarrassed in that game.

“They come here against a team that had a lot to prove but was struggling in a lot of areas and it was the same old story."

The Cowboys have lost four of their last five games, but the last two have been the most disappointing.

The Cowboys started their Thanksgiving matchup against the Bills with a touchdown on their opening drive and then went scoreless until they scored a touchdown with a two-point conversion with four minutes left in the game when the outcome had already been decided.

It was the same old story against the Bears, as the Cowboys again looked promising early, scoring on their first drive with an Ezekiel Elliott touchdown. The Bears then went on to score 24 unanswered points to take a 24-7 lead going into the fourth quarter. Dallas scored 17 points in the fourth quarter, but it was again when the game was already out of reach.

Despite the Cowboys’ struggles, they are still very much in the race to win the NFC East because the Philadelphia Eagles have been just as bad, if not worse. Dallas still has a half-game lead on the Eagles, who face the struggling Giants on Monday. The Cowboys get 10 days off before facing the Los Angeles Rams at home on Dec. 15.

"Even though we knew before this game kicked off that it didn’t matter if they lost, they were still going to be in contention. I don’t know how you sell that if you’re Jason Garrett or Jerry Jones or anyone. When you have a performance like that to say ‘Hey! But we’re still alive. We’ll go play this week against the Rams and it’s all right out in front of us.’

“I don’t think the players hear that. I wouldn’t hear it if I were them. And this is on the players as much as it is the coaches. They’ve got to be better. I’m not sure I’d even talk to the team this week. I’d just say ‘Let’s just go play next week and you guys figure it out.’ But the talk is over and it has been over for a while.”
