How to stream Spotify music on your Fitbit - The Verge

While the higher-end Fitbit models allow you to download streaming music apps, until recently, the only available options were for less popular services like Deezer and Pandora. Fitbit has added Spotify to its list of supported music clients, so if you own one of the Fitbit smartwatches that support apps, you can now pair your Spotify account with your smartwatch.

Currently, music playback is supported by the Versa, Versa 2, Versa Lite, and Ionic. If you don’t own any of these smartwatches or their “Special Edition” versions, sorry, you’re out of luck.

You’ll also need a Spotify Premium account to be able to stream music from your account on the Fitbit; regular ad-listeners won’t be able to take advantage of the integration.

To stream Spotify playlists from your Fitbit, you first need to download the app by following these steps. (Here’s a guide for downloading Fitbit apps in general, if you need it.)

• Open your Fitbit mobile app and tap your avatar icon on the upper right corner to be taken to your profile.
• Tap the device you want to download Spotify onto.
• Select Apps.
• Find Spotify under the list of supported apps. You currently can’t search for apps in the Fitbit app section, but there aren’t very many, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find.
• Press Install.

Fitbit will ask you for permission to run the app in the background and for internet access. The app requires both internet and background access to stream music; even with a Spotify Premium account, Fitbit currently does not support offline playback, so it will need to be connected to the web and near your smartphone. (We tried revoking background access, but the app won’t function without it.)

After the app has been installed, you’ll see a Settings menu at the bottom of the Spotify app page on the Fitbit app. Select this, and you’ll be taken to a Spotify page that you can use to log in with your account or with your Facebook profile, or sign up if you don’t already have an account.

While the Fitbit does have a built-in microphone, it does not have speakers, so in order to hear the music being played, you’ll still need to connect to external speakers. Supported devices include a smartphone, tablet, computer, or any Bluetooth headphones / speaker / smart home speaker that supports Spotify Connect.

With your Fitbit app, you can browse playlists, shuffle songs, skip, or rewind music. (Note that the Spotify app currently only shows your eight most recently streamed playlists.) Swipe right, then select Library to see your playlist options.

You can also like a song if you’re listening to a recommended tune from Spotify’s Discover Weekly playlist, which will add them to a separate playlist. Since this is a Fitbit after all, the Spotify app also offers a specific “Workout” playlist which curates some energizing songs for your sweat session.

As mentioned before, the Fitbit does not have built-in speakers, so you won’t be able to go for an outdoor run without your phone and stream from Spotify. It also lacks the capability to search for artists, songs, and albums on the smartwatch app itself, though you can do so on your smartphone and then have the controls appear on your Fitbit.

You also can’t store Spotify music internally for offline playback, or manually create a new playlist from the smartwatch other than liking songs that appear from pre-made playlists.

Basically, for now, the only thing Fitbit supports is playback control, and while it’s not an expansive app, it’s a lot more appealing if you already have Spotify Premium and want your Fitbit to act as a secondary control.
