Indianapolis — Student-athletes who hope to play sports in college will be able to use e-learning, distance, and hybrid learning options to satisfy initial eligibility requirements, according to a document released by the NCAA Eligibility Center on Wednesday morning.
"Consistent with the approach to reviews in Spring/Summer 2020, the Eligibility Center will not require a separate review of distance, e-learning or hybrid programs offered by schools with NCAA-approved core courses in response to COVID-19 for the 2020-21 academic year," the NCAA said. "Students may complete their NCAA-approved core courses through the channels of instruction provided or recommended by their school, district or state department of education."
This means if a school offers an approved core course in-person, but due to the pandemic has to shift to a different form of learning, the NCAA will still recognize the course for the initial eligibility of an incoming freshman.
The standard will not only apply to the Class of 2021, but to all classes currently enrolled in high school, beginning with freshmen, during the 2020-2021 school year.
During the spring and summer, the NCAA has had a similar policy for approved core courses.
Student-athletes enrolling in a Division I school must complete four years of English; three years of math; two years of natural or physical science; an extra year of English, math, or natural/physical science; two years of social sciences; and four years of additional courses from any of the previous categories, a foreign language, or comparative religion or philosophy.
Division II requirements include three years of English; two years of math; two years of natural or physical science; three additional years of either English, math, or science; two years of social sciences; and four years of additional courses.
Each school has its own list of approved core courses, which can be found on the NCAA Eligibility Center website.
The NCAA said its guidance may not capture all unique scenarios. Student-athletes and parents with questions can contact the NCAA Eligibility Center on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 877-262-1492.
"The Eligibility Center will continue to monitor the environment and make determinations on extension of other COVID-19 relief policies as more information becomes available," the document said.
