DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball program is excited to announce the start of the Share the Mic campaign, a partnership with NC Central's volleyball team.

Spearheaded by assistant coach Kellie Catanach Johnson, Share the Mic is intended to help increase the visibility of NC Central's program within our sport, provide a platform for their student-athletes to have their voices heard and form a partnership between the two schools to impact change for years to come. We will lend our social media platform to the Eagles biweekly on Tuesdays.

"Since May, Duke volleyball has had an ongoing conversation amongst our team and alumni about how we, a predominantly white team in a predominantly white sport, can work to be better allies to our Black peers and to our diverse Durham community," Catanach Johnson said. "As a program, we want to both protect and empower our Black student-athletes, as well as bring attention to the social justice issues that Black Americans face on a daily basis. While we know that shining light on these issues is critical to change, we also understand that those changes take time and we wanted to come up with ways to take impactful action now."

Share the Mic kicked off Tuesday with Arlanda Faulkner, a 5-9 outside hitter from Goldsboro, N.C., showcasing NC Central's campus and their facilities.

"Personally, I've enjoyed the privilege of a husband who is not only a former Duke football student-athlete, but who has worked at two different HBCUs over the last several years," Catanach Johnson said. "This has allowed me the opportunity to understand just a little bit better the experiences of these student-athletes. HBCUs have such incredible and rich histories and, like so many Black stories, they are often overlooked. We've also learned that one of the most important pieces of allyship is elevating Black voices and were inspired by the #ShareTheMic movement on social media this summer to lend our own platform. As a program, we have the privilege of the Duke brand, which gives us an opportunity to reach tens of thousands of people through our social media platforms. By marrying these two things, we knew we could use this privilege to take actionable steps towards change by lending the power of that Duke brand. NC Central and Duke are both vital parts of the Durham community and all of our student-athletes deserve to have their stories told and hard work recognized."

"Both programs have driven, intelligent, powerful young women who can work together to make our Durham community, our sport and our world a better place," Catanach Johnson added. "We are honored and thankful to begin this journey with NCCU volleyball."

Duke will open the 2020 fall slate Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m., on ACC Network versus NC State in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
