CVS Pharmacy is the first national retailer to offer touch-free payments through PayPal and Venmo.
The chain, owned by CVS Health, this week began accepting QR codes at more than 8,000 locations, inviting customers to pay for items without touching a keypad or signing a receipt.
The COVID-friendly experience is available now for existing Venmo and PayPal clients; new users can sign up and link their preferred payment method to get started. Simply open your preferred spending app, click "Scan," and select "show to pay." Then choose between a stored debit or credit card, connected bank account, in-app balance, or branded credit line. Best of all, you'll continue banking those CVS ExtraCare rewards points, redeemable using the ExtraCare account when checking out with PayPal or Venmo QR codes.
"Putting our customer's safety at the forefront of our innovations, we've focused resources on finding new ways to make customers' lives easier and more convenient," Jon Roberts, executive vice president and chief operating officer at CVS Health, said in a statement. "Introducing more digital options, including touch-free payments at the register, is in step with changing consumer preferences."
As more people ditch paper money for mobile payments, CVS has seen a 43 percent increase in touch-free transactions; PayPal's research, meanwhile, suggests more than a third of people are unwilling to shop where QR code payments are not accepted.
"The launch of PayPal and Venmo QR codes in CVS Pharmacy stores will not only provide health-conscious customers with a touch-free way to pay at checkout, but also brings the safety and security of PayPal and Venmo transactions into the store with shoppers," according to PayPal Senior Vice President Jeremy Jonker, head of consumer in-store and digital commerce. "We are thrilled that PayPal and Venmo QR codes will help to maintain the safety of CVS customers and employees, especially in the essential pharmacy retail environment as we go into the winter months."
