Surdyka bowls his way to share of house record - lehighvalleylive.com

suitersa.blogspot.com

A house record tied, two bowlers with their first 300 games, and the women of the area continuing to pour it on highlight this week’s scoring.

Rob Surdyka said he heard a voice, as he stepped up for the 10th frame, telling him to get a double. The 32-year-old obliged and got nine to polish off an 824 in the Pocono Mountain Harley Davidson League at Mountainhome Lanes.

What Surdyka learned was the nine-count resulted in a tie for the center’s house record along with Marty Kirsten Jr.

“I was a little shocked at the 824 and I didn’t know what the house record was,” said the East Stroudsburg resident of his 278-279-267 effort. “I was just happy with a 30-clean night. I’m usually good for a couple of missed 10-pins.”

A 10-pin following the front nine in the middle game stopped his bid for his 29th career perfect game. He stood two more over the first six frames before striking five more times.

“It’s been a bit since I’ve had 800, so to get one and tie a record is pretty satisfying. I’m having a pretty good season, averaging 233 and I’m looking to get into a few more tournaments,” he said.

The 824 is his sixth 800 but shy of a career-high 836. The set at the Cresco center leapfrogs an 821 by Bill Kellogg and John Mitchell’s 820.

Salobecke’s sweet series

When Ryan Salobecke needs some advice or guidance, he needs to look no further than his father. Rich Salobecke is an accomplished bowler and over the summer, Ryan sat down looking to retool and energize his game.

Since the start of the season, the 28-year-old Easton resident has watched his average jump from 204 to 221 and last Sunday he added his first perfect game.

“It feels great because I think getting one at Bar-Don is an accomplishment,” he said of his 245-192-300--737 in the Sunday Night Mixed League. “I’ve changed my equipment and I’m going straighter. I don’t have to cross as many boards.”

Last month, Salobecke had Shawn Sottosanti toss an 812 against him, so a little revenge was a motivating factor.

“It was a friendly payback,” Salobecke said. “The second game things didn’t go my way and I made a ball change to start the third. I remembered what my dad said and went up the gutter.”

Salobecke sailed through the front nine and nervously approached the final three shots. He dropped the first two racks before calling on another piece of advice from his father.

“He told me to take three deep breathes before I went. I let the last ball go and I knew I tugged it and asked it to hold,” he said. “I don’t think I had a lot on it and it went flush.”

The 300 replaces a pair of 299s. He now looks to bump up his average to 225 by season’s end.

Smolin returns to sport

As a 32-year-old, Zach Smolin is considered a freshman in the adult leagues. Having taken a 15-year hiatus since last bowling as a junior at Earl Bowl, the resident of Emmaus dabbled in other things, including disc golf before being coaxed into the Alton Park League at Jordan Lanes.

The early season results have shown Smolin at a 203 norm and he most recently picked up his first career 300.

“I didn’t think I was going to bowl this well this quick,” Smolin said following his 747 set, including an opening game of 300. “It was an easy feeling that night. I was confident and the first eight shots were all flush. I tried to keep my head clear for the last frame.”

It was 10 up, 10 down to open the 10th box. His strategy for the money ball was to stay cool while nerves were kept to a minimum.

“I liked the last ball out of my hand. I don’t think it was my best form because it was a little slow but it struck. It was a good feeling. It was exciting, for sure,” he said.

Smolin tacked on games of 234 and 213 to finish out the match. He hopes to watch his average climb near the 220 mark and notes in order to get there he needs to tighten up his spare game. The 300 tops a previous 279.

Polash top among ladies

The area women continue to shine and last week Bella Polash nearly joined an elite group.

Polash struck early and often in the Friday Night Lehigh Valley Masters Classic League at Rose Bowl. She bolted from the gates with 247, before peeling off games of 279 and 268 for 794. The set is second only to Krista Sandt’s 805 at Hampton.

Nicole Walker tossed her second career 300 game in the Friday Scratch Trios League at Blue Valley. She opened her night with 300, using a freshly drilled ball. She tacked on 242 and 212 for 754. Heather Labar tallied 750 in the Saturday Night Mixers circuit at Jordan. Sandt added a 715 to the list at Hampton.

Two days after Ryan Salobecke shot 300, Rich Salobecke took down a dozen at Town & Country during a 737 set. Brandon Setzer needed only three days after shooting his first 300 to nail down his second in the same circuit as Walker.

Brian Weist and Chris Kishbaugh clipped Mountainhome for 300s. For Kishbaugh, it’s his 106th career 12-bagger and the area’s 55th on the season. Rob Dutt polished off a big week with an 811 at Blue Valley.
