Syracuse, N.Y. -- A Syracuse bike-share program rolled out in 2019 to much fanfare has been suspended, City of Syracuse officials confirmed Saturday.
Gotcha, the company that runs the program, told city officials the “pandemic, the impending winter weather and financial constraints” led to the program being shut down, according to Mayor Ben Walsh’s chief policy officer Greg Loh.
On Friday, Gotcha, the company that runs the bike share program, sent an email to subscribers saying that the program would be suspended. Bikes have not been available since Friday night, the company said in the email.
The city is exploring other options and will continue to have discussions with Gotcha, which told city officials it would like to resume operations, Loh said.
As recently as about two weeks ago, Gotcha had rolled out a Roll to the Polls program, offering free rides to polling places.
A bike-sharing program had been on Walsh’s agenda since he took office in 2018. The city added more bike lanes to make roads more bike-friendly just before the program started.
Gotcha provided 200 e-bikes, with 35 hubs around the City of Syracuse and Syracuse University. The network of hubs was designed to connect riders to the city’s existing bike lanes, as well as multiple bus stations.
