OKLAHOMA CITY – Mautra Staley Jones, the Journal Record 2020 Woman of the Year, will deliver this year’s keynote address at the annual event Oct. 14.

The Journal Record program, now in its 41st year, will recognize the “50 Making a Difference” honorees and name this year’s Woman of the Year overall winner on Thursday night at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

Jones is planning to share a message of “hope, inspiration” and “encouragement” with the anticipated 400-plus attendees. “I want to bring a message that applauds the hard work that we do, but that also encourages the tenacity, perseverance and resiliency that we all have to face as women, as leaders, as mothers, wives, community servants – you name it,” she said.

Jones has worked at Langston University since 2015, currently serving as vice president for institutional advancement and external affairs, executive director of the Langston University Foundation and site administrator for the university’s Oklahoma City campus.

As part of her whirlwind year of achievement, Jones completed her doctorate in education from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education last December before being named the 2021 Oklahoma Mother of the Year by American Mothers Inc., which then went on to select her as their 2021 National Mother of the Year in May.

“Last year was just quite the year,” Jones said. “The pandemic brought about so many challenges, having to navigate family, children, school and career. To be recognized during such times made the honors even more impactful, more meaningful to my life because we are having to navigate so many obstacles and challenges, and we’re having to be innovative in our approaches, think outside the box and do things that we ordinarily haven’t done.”

In July 2021, BancFirst Corp. announced her appointment to the company’s board of directors. Jones also serves on the board of advisors for the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber and is a board director for the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, StitchCrew, Civic Center Foundation, Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs and Oklahoma City Philharmonic.

Making a difference, serving others and exhibiting volunteerism are all passions of Jones.

“I’m doing what I love to do,” she said. “I’m making a difference, but it’s because it’s what’s in my heart; it’s deeply ingrained in who I am as a person wanting to build others up.”

Jones is a member of the Woman of the Year Circle of Excellence, a distinction for those honorees being selected three times. This year, a cadre of six woman will be added to the prestigious group – Cindy Friedemann, Cynda C. Ottoway, Judy Richey, Julie Knutson, Leah T. Rudnicki and Nyla Ali Kahn.

A complete list of honorees is available below, representing a variety of industries and companies across the state, and including several public service notables such as Joy Hofmeister, Kay Floyd, Carri Hicks, Amy Loftis-Walton, Marcie Mack and Breea Clark.
