MANISTEE — PFLAG Manistee is hosting an event at 2 p.m. on Sunday that aims to share one transgender man's story.
In June, PFLAG Manistee presented a program of stories told by parents who had an LGBTQ+ adult child and by individuals who identify as transgender and/or nonbinary. Those who attended the presentation learned much about the experiences and challenges of growing up and living as an adult member of the LGBTQ+ community.

One of the speakers at the program was Eden Akins, who has recently returned from 10 weeks of basic training in the Michigan National Guard.
Akins identifies as a transgender male and he signed up at the age of 17 to enter the National Guard with his sex at birth listing of female. After graduating from basic training in August, he now fills his commitment by spending one weekend a month training with the National Guard. Akins is also enrolled at West Shore Community College where he is studying for his Bachelor of Arts degree.
Akins has many enlightening stories to share about his experiences as a transgender man in the National Guard. Some of these experiences are positive and others are negative and hurtful.
Akins' experiences living and working in the area may open minds to a much wider view of the diversity in the community and to an appreciation of the challenges and the triumphs of one young person who lives his life with courage and pride.
Anyone who would like to join PFLAG Manistee and hear Akins' story should register online at pflag-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIpdOqgrDwoGtxz9lkKcZhVcQcI_lU0zJcK. Participants will receive an email with a direct link to join the meeting. For further information contact pflagmanistee@gmail.com.
