Millville High School graduates accepted their diplomas at the finish line on Tuesday after they went around the track at the New Jersey Motorsports Park.
The graduating class, which totaled over 400 students, attended their unique celebratory lap at the motorsports park in Millville after their ceremony, which was held at Millville High School’s Wheaton Field Stadium.
The tradition of graduating seniors going to the motorsports park is rather new, beginning in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the high school’s third graduating class to accept diplomas at the start-finish line.
The 140th commencement ceremony began with a speech from Board of Education President Kimberly Carty, which outlined the unusual high school experience that students endured after the COVID-19 pandemic hit during their sophomore year.
“Graduates, you not only endured, but you have thrived,” said Carty. “Despite all the uncertainties and changes in the world ... you’ve done it together.”
Senior Class President Nakeisha Vohringer addressed her peers in a speech thanking those in the bleachers who supported the graduates throughout their lives.
“We cannot forget to mention our parents and loved ones,” said Vohringer. “There is no need for sadness during this time. We stand here tonight because of you. The love, support and guidance you have given us this far has not gone unnoticed.”
Vohringer’s speech was followed by speeches from Salutatorian Anthony Kukal, V, Valedictorian Jacob Lewis, Principal Jaime Sutton and Superintendent Tony Trongone.
Throughout the wave of graduates in blue gowns, a chair was left empty with a cap and gown and bouquet of flowers for Jerome Rosa-Ortiz, a student who passed away and was a part of the Class of 2022.
After their speeches, a certificate of remembrance was given to Rosa-Ortiz’s mother as she graced the graduating stage wearing a shirt printed with a photo of him on it.
A quick burst of rain interrupted the graduation as staff handed students their diploma casing, but that didn’t stop the graduates from celebrating their achievements.
After the ceremony, students made their way to the motorsports park, where they were given gift bags and sent on their way down the race track to accept their diploma.
The gift bags were provided by Millville High School PTSA, an organization of student, parent and teacher volunteers. Inside each were blue and orange sunglasses, a #boltpride lanyard, insulated tumblers by DC Engraving, a coupon for karting at the motorsports park and a water bottle donated by Wawa.
Many of the students were in cars decorated in graduation decorations with their families, who wore looks of pride for their graduates.
The Millville High School graduates celebrated their diplomas in a unique way as the sun set over the motorsports park.
Sutton ended her speech with advice for the new graduates, saying: “You have left your mark as Millville High School’s class of 2022. Now, it is time to leave your mark, wherever your next path may lead.”
Across the state, thousands of students are graduating as part of the Class of 2022 and NJ Advance Media will be sending photographers to dozens of high school graduations throughout the month.
