From the Desk of Warde Manuel: Accept the Champions Challenge

From the desk of Warde Manuel, Donald R. Shepherd Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Michigan:
Dear Michigan faithful,
Over the past several months, I have witnessed change and uncertainty like no other time in the history of Michigan Athletics. From the Big Ten's ruling to postpone fall competition to the recent decision to resume football, our student-athletes, staff, students, alums and you have adapted to a seemingly constant state of unpredictability.
But it's in these moments I am reminded of the one thing that has not changed: our pledge to comprehensively support our 900+ student-athletes who are still relying on us to help navigate the multitude of unique and formidable challenges they have faced, and are facing, this year. While we are eager to take the field soon, the reality remains that Michigan Athletics is facing our most threatening financial challenge in department history.
With that in mind, we are excited to announce the Champions Challenge campaign. The fundraising campaign aims to build on the success of the Michigan Athletics Champions Fund, which launched two years ago with the goal of sustaining critical student-athlete support areas within the athletics department, including:
Since the Champions Fund's inception in February of 2019, our incredible supporters have contributed over $8 million to this fund ... THANK YOU. With rising costs and the ever-evolving need for support, the Champions Challenge campaign comes at a time when supporting these programs faces significant challenges, given the current financial challenges as a direct result of COVID-19. With the largest living alumni base in the world joined by an even larger community of supporters, our goal is to reach 4,500 individual donors specific to the Champions Fund.
Donors who accept the Champions Challenge will be able to monitor progress, participate in and track challenges, and get unique content and access only available to donors. As the year progresses, we will announce new opportunities within this challenge to support our more than 900 student-athletes.
While 2020 continues to bring unforeseen difficulties that affect so many, Michigan Athletics will continue to be Leaders and Best. So much of the credit goes to you, our donors! We hope you accept this challenge on behalf of our student-athletes and the department.
