Like everything else this year, Halloween is going to look a lot different, with kids and adults alike finding safe new ways to celebrate. But in the spirit of Halloweens past – and future – we asked a series of Twin Cities television anchors to share photos of their favorite costumes and the stories behind them.
Here’s what they had to say.
-
“This is a picture of me with my two little girls on Halloween in 2018. My superhero costume is pretty lame. But I was having a great time seeing them play superheroes. My daughter Grace is Wonder Woman and her little sister Eloise is Bat Girl. They were six and four at the time. They felt so bold with their their super powers for the day. I was happy to play along.” – Leah McLean, anchor, KSTP
-
“These are two Halloween Pictures from different years. The first is a Halloween costume when I was Carrie from the 1976 horror film starring Sissy Spacek. Our theme on the 'FOX 9 Buzz' in 2018 was the prom.” – Alix Kendall, anchor, FOX 9
-
“The second was Halloween 2019, when our theme was the 1980s. I was Pat Benatar. I was a huge fan of her music back in those days. With me are my 'Buzz' co-hosts Keith Marler, playing Robert Palmer, and Kelly O’Connell. who was Cyndi Lauper. I’ve dressed up every year for Halloween. It's a creative outlet for me where I can have fun outside of my job in television news.” – Alix Kendall, anchor, FOX 9
-
“My favorite Halloween costume as an adult was when my 1 1/2-year-old son Seth and I both went as Superman. This picture from 2006 is from a costume contest at Mall of America we went to with some WCCO co-workers. Clearly we were robbed and should have won! Seth is now 15 and if he was wearing the same thing as me now, I’m certain he would literally die.” – Jason DeRusha, anchor, WCCO
-
“Recently I have been going through a lot of old photos and I came across this picture from my fourth Halloween, in 1982. It’s funny how some photos can transport you back in time, instantly. When I saw this photo of me in an R2D2 costume, I immediately recalled details from that house in New York that I spent my first 5 years in – the neighbor cat that I loved to pet and the smell of the pine needles in the backyard after rain or snow. The crinkly cellophane on the cover of the box that my costume came in, the distinct smell of the cheap plastic the costume was made from, the sweatfest that was the mask. And, my dad, always annoying me with a camera … that, now, I wouldn't trade for the world.” – Mike Augustyniak, director of meteorology, WCCO
-
“Everyone expects me to be a pirate with the whole missing a leg thing, but it seems too cliche. So my go-to costume in the last several years has been a creepy Carhart clown. The overalls alone are horrifying in how they fit, but I feel the really low budget clown mask from Target completes the look nicely.” – Chris Egert, anchor, KSTP
-
“A few years back at a neighborhood party for parents and kids, I stood outside the back window for about 25 minutes and just stared inside without moving. It turned out to be a terribly terrific tactic!” – Chris Egert, anchor, KSTP
-
“This is from the KARE 11 Saturday show from 2011. Obviously a nod to 'The Wizard of Oz.' A great costume, but the mobility was quite atrocious for the two hour show, and frankly I think the Scarecrow would've been far more appropriate for me.” – Eric Perkins, sports director, KARE 11
-
“The first picture is from my first Halloween in 1976. I was two years old and dressed as a clown. I'm sure the two guys with me are friends from the old neighborhood, but thanks to the masks, I can't tell who they are.” – Chris Long, anchor, KSTP
-
“The second is from around fourth or fifth grade. My neighbor Dave and I are on my doorstep about to hit the trick or treating scene. No clue what I’m supposed to be.” – Chris Long, anchor, KSTP
-
“Our friends who live next to us used to have an annual Halloween party. I was trying to figure out 'couple' costumes. I’ve always loved Halloween – coming up with a costume idea, figuring out how to create it. The night before the party, Frank said he had another idea. He ran out Saturday morning on a mission. He wouldn't tell me what his costume was going to be. Party time came and he walked out as Forrest Gump. I didn't have enough time to come up with a Jenny costume, so I went as a witch.” – Amelia Santaniello, anchor, WCCO, on behalf of her husband and co-anchor Frank Vascellaro
-
"Then halfway through the party, he made a costume change. Still Forrest, but Forrest when he went on his epic run.” – Amelia Santaniello, anchor, WCCO, on behalf of her husband and co-anchor Frank Vascellaro
-
“This is pathetic, but one year I made my dogs dress up as Han Solo and Chewbacca. They could barely look me in the eye. But that hair piece, though!” – Amy Hockert, anchor, FOX 9
-
"Sorry, I should've edited Bennett's privates out. Double humiliation.” – Amy Hockert, anchor, FOX 9
