CLEVELAND, Ohio – Dozens of Cuyahoga County organizations are among 296 groups receiving a share of $20 million worth of grants designed to bolster arts and culture during the coronavirus pandemic, the Ohio Arts Council announced this week.

The money comes from the federal CARES Act and was authorized by Gov. Mike DeWine and the Ohio Controlling Board last month. By law, the Ohio Arts Council had to allocate the money by Dec. 30.

Local institutions include the Cleveland Museum of Art, which will get $319,700; The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, $261,100, Cleveland Play House, $299,300; Great Lakes Theater Festival, $200,900; Karamu House, $139,800; Cleveland Film Festival, $143,800; Dobama Theatre, $69,100; and Waterloo Arts, $39,200.

Some of the lesser-known groups getting money include the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society, $66,200; Fevered Dreams Productions, $35,500; Mercury Summer Stock, $31,100; Tremont West Development Corp., $29,700; and Playwrights Local 4181, $10,300;

None of the $20 million will go toward the OAC’s overhead or administrative expenses, the council announced, and the awards were determined through a “tiered, need-based formula that considered each eligible organization’s budget and reported expenses qualifying under the CARES Act.”
