The War Memorial Field renovation project continues to move ahead and bring in more money toward its campaign goal.

On Thursday, representatives of Warren Sports Boosters accepted a check for $100,000 from United Refining Company in support of the work at the field.

“We are beyond excited and grateful,” Boosters President Mike Boyd said as URC’s Dave Wortman and Barb Kulinski presented him with the check.

Kulinski said supporting the field was providing support for the community. “Not many kids have an opportunity to play at a facility like this,” she said.

The construction of the field was a massive undertaking initially and the boosters have worked over decades to maintain it for the community.

“Someone did it for us,” Boyd said. “We need to do it for the next generation.”

The United contribution brings the fund-raising to about $875,000. The original goal for the renovations was $1 million. Price increases have driven up the estimated amount needed for full completion, but the track and the field will be prioritized and “it shouldn’t affect the start of football or fall sports,” Boyd said.

Some desired upgrades, like those to the locker rooms, will be put on hold.

The URC team asked the boosters for a progress report.

Boyd said the “turf team” from FieldTurf of Pittsburgh, was expected to arrive and begin work Friday. However, a quality control issue with a portion of the turf was discovered. The new delivery date was set to Wednesday “as part of it is being remanufactured,” Boyd said. “It’s disappointing, but we want it done right.”

He said the company had promised its most experienced team for the job.

The turf was manufactured in Germany, Boyd said.

The pieces will be both sewn and glued together, he said. Asked if field markings, lines, yard numbers and the like were included, Boyd said they were.

“When the field was first put in, the numbers were not included,” he said. Part of players’ responsibilities back then was to stomp the turf that the paint hardened into tiny blades.

The milling and paving of the track area is complete and the rubberized track surface will be installed after the turf installation is finished. That process “is about three or four weeks,” he said.

He said he expects the turf to be ready for the football home opener.

New fencing will be installed as part of the project and the goal posts will be painted.

Boyd said fund-raising will continue.

When the time comes, “we’ll have a rededication ceremony,” he said.
