Question: Considering that many individuals have lost their jobs and many small businesses may not reopen due to the coronavirus, why would Tennessee Tech accept $8.7 million from the CARES Act? Shouldn’t they return the money like some other universities and colleges?
Answer: TTU Chief Communication Officer Karen Lykins said, "Of the $8.7 million, at least $7.7 million will go back into the pockets of Tech students.
"A large number of students will receive a cash payment that will help them offset their costs from lost jobs or other expenses. Another pool of money will be available for grants to be awarded by an application process to students in need due to COVID-19.
"The remaining funds received by the university will be used to cover the unbudgeted costs related to the pandemic, such as refunds to students and other costs incurred in putting classes online, including additional software licenses and additional bandwidth. The entire $8.7 million is being used to cover unbudgeted expenses incurred on behalf of students.
"The university has costs associated with residence halls whether anybody lives on campus or not. The debt payment on the bonds used to build the residence halls must be paid. Also, Tech’s food vendor does not give full refunds to the university for students who left and are unable to use their meal plans, so that is also a cost Tech must absorb.
"Media reports indicate the schools that returned money were those with large private endowments, including the nation’s five wealthiest private universities."
Question: Are there plans to replace the tornado sirens in Cookeville?
Answer: Putnam EMA Director Tyler Smith said that decision is up to the City of Cookeville. Cookeville City Manager James Mills said he is not aware of any plans to replace the tornado sirens in the city.
