Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez, football coach Paul Chryst and men’s basketball coach Greg Gard have accepted 15 percent pay cuts, the university announced Saturday.

Wisconsin said it asked its 25 highest-earning employees in the athletic department to take the cut over a six-month span. The university said the plan would save approximately $2.8 million as officials weigh ways to deal with financial losses prompted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Chyrst made $4.15 million last season, according to USA Today’s football coaches salary database. Gard made $2.45 million according to the same entity’s college basketball salary research, while Alvarez makes a reported $1.55 million.

Another group of employees will have their working hours reduced by 20 to 50 percent from May 18 to July 25. The approximately 350 workers would be eligible to apply for unemployment benefits, according to the school.

“Reducing compensation and work hours is obviously not something I want to see for any of our Badger Athletics family,” Alvarez said in the news release. “But we are facing the same financial challenges that other organizations across the country are. We are working hard to minimize the impact on our employees while responding to the realities of the situation created by the pandemic.”
