Crosby coach Jerry Prieto and his Cougars watched Nederland celebrate on the field at Crosby Stadium Friday night.

The Bulldogs defeated Crosby, 29-24, to clinch a share of the District 15-5A Division II title.

Prieto kept his message simple to his team after the Cougars' six-game district winning streak was snapped.

“We got smacked in the face tonight and that hadn’t happened in a while,” Prieto said. “It’s time to get back to work and fix our mistakes. Now we’re in a one game season. You win or move on and pack your stuff the next day.”

Crosby (7-3, 6-1) had its chance to win the game after Jamauir Johnson caught an interception off a tipped ball.

The Cougars marched down the field, but then fumbled the ball with three minutes left to go in the game.

Crosby had three timeouts, but Nederland (7-2, 6-1) converted on a 3rd and 8 when quarterback Rene Cunningham hit Kerrington Broussard for a 10-yard gain late in the fourth quarter.

This was the first time in a while that the Crosby starters played a whole game.

“It might have affected us,” Prieto said. “But at the end of the day, they beat us. We didn’t excute at times and they played hard and excited and made those plays down the stretch to beat us.

Nederland had a 15-3 lead after Cunningham went with the quarterback sneak with 11:13 left in the second quarter.

Then the Cougars got into a rhythm and erased a 12-point deficit.

Crosby’s all-around athlete Deniquez Dunn threw a halfback pass to wide receiver Kameren Kirkwood for a 51-yard TD pass that cut the Bulldogs' lead to five points with 11:24 left in the second quarter.

Crosby then blocked a Nederland punt and capitalized with an E’Monte Wilson 8-yard touchdown run to take its first lead of the game with 4:07 left in the second quarter.

Just before halftime, Crosby’s Jonathan Fuselier intercepted the ball as the Cougars went into the locker room with a 17-15 lead.

“It was good for us to do that because we haven’t faced adversity in a while,” Prieto said. “Disappointed in the second half, punting on our first possession and then they go right down and score. It sucks to lose but we have a lot of learning to do. Hopefully we take a lot from this game and we will be back on the grind tomorrow.”

Nederland’s Josh Mazyek, who scored on a 78-yard TD run in the first quarter, got the Bulldogs going on their first drive of the second half, breaking through the Crosby defense for a 38-yard TD run that gave the Bulldogs a 23-17 lead with 6:58 left in third quarter.

Crosby responded quickly, marching down the field as Dunn cruised into the end zone for a 3-yard TD run to give the Cougars a 24-23 lead with 3:26 left in the third quarter.

Nederland’s offense kept moving as Cunningham connected with wide receiver Kyndon Fuselier for a 78-yard TD pass to take a 29-24 lead after a missed two-point conversion pass, but it was enough to secure the win.

“Our goals are still in front of us,” Prieto said. “We have been through a lot this season, but it’s time for the playoffs and we put ourselves in position to be in the playoffs. Now, we have to go back to work and grind.”
