Re “Vacancy tax, land trusts among ideas to take on housing crisis” (Feb. 11): The City Council trying to force landlords to rent to pet owners is yet another example of government trying to control things it has no business controlling and refusing to make people responsible for their personal lifestyle choices.
I used to be a landlord. So glad I am no longer one. Because if I were, I would jack up the rent in anticipation of damage that inevitably comes with pets. Not to mention higher liability costs for potential lawsuits from possible dog attacks (which I know of three — all from renters — in my current neighborhood).
The City Council proposal ends up hurting renters — not helping them. Even fewer people will be able to afford rent in San Diego. Put the responsibility where it belongs, City Council. Pets are a luxury, not a right.
