Letter | RTC needs to move forward, accept rail plan - Santa Cruz Sentinel

suitersa.blogspot.com

Santa Cruz county is drowning in traffic. It is obvious that our current path – highways – is inadequate. The only viable answer is to reactivate the old rail line to Watsonville (which will eventually connect to CalTrain and thus enable automobile-free transport to Santa Cruz from almost everywhere in the SF Bay area).

We must think of the rail line as a decades-long investment in our own future. It is not a short-term purchase in which we can know in advance all the costs and risks. External sources of state and federal funding have recently become likely. There will be strong competition for those funds. If we do not act decisively and quickly we may find those funds have been granted to others and we will have missed our opportunity.

Our RTC ought to demonstrate leadership and accept the rail Business Plan at its May 6 meeting.

— Karl Auerbach, Chris Wellens, Santa Cruz

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at https://ift.tt/323VLsP.
