KENT, Ohio – Down the stretch, and picking up steam.

The Central Michigan wrestling team scored bonus points in five of its seven wins on Sunday in posting a dominant 32-9 victory over Kent State at the Golden Flashes' M.A.C. Center.

The win upped CMU's Mid-American Conference dual-meet record to 6-0 and a share of the MAC West Division title.

The Chippewas can claim the outright title with a victory over Buffalo when they meet at McGuirk Arena on Sunday, Feb. 13 (2 p.m.). The Bulls are 6-1 in conference duals.

"We're happy with where we are," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "We're happy with the way the guys are training, the way they're performing, and just the way they've come on all year long. We expect it to continue and get better."

The Chippewas are 11-2 overall, ranked 20th in the InterMat dual-meet top 25 poll, and third in the National Wrestling Coaches Association mid-major poll. The 11 wins ties the 2015-16 team for the most by a CMU squad since the 2012-13 squad finished 17-3.

The Chippewas will look to claim their first MAC title since 2013 March 4-5 in Athens, Ohio.

The Chippewas, who opened the weekend road trip with a 26-9 league win at Edinboro on Friday, got pins from Matt Stencel (285 pounds) and Ben Cushman (184) to lead the dominant performance on Sunday at Kent (5-7, 3-4).

CMU got tech-fall victories from Johnny Lovett (157) and Bret Fedewa (174) and a major-decision win from Dresden Simon (141). CMU's Brock Bergelin (125) and Tracy Hubbard (165) won by decision.

"I'm really happy with the progress that we're making," Borrelli said "Every match you're a little nervous about what might happen with certain matches and outcomes, and we seem to be coming out on the good side of that in most of those matches.

"I can see out improvement, especially some of our upper weights. Really impressed with how they're improving right now.

"Fedewa and Hubbard are really executing the game plan that we try to outline for them and they're doing a really good job of that. Cushman, the matches that he's lost, could have gone either way. He's right on the verge of breaking through and hopefully that's going to happen as we go into the postseason."

• It was the first pin of the season for Cushman, who completed a 2-0 weekend.

• Fedewa won for the fourth time in his last five matches as he posted his fourth tech fall of the season in upping his record to 18-11. He shares the team lead with Corbyn Munson.

• Hubbard won for the eighth time in his last nine matches, improving to 18-8.

• Stencel, who is ranked eighth nationally, posted his 10th pin of the season in improving to 13-3.

• Lovett, who is ranked 16th, ran his win streak to 10 matches with his first tech fall of the season.

• Bergelin, who is ranked 33rd, improved to 17-7, winning for the sixth consecutive time.

• The 10th-ranked Simon rebounded from a loss by pin on Friday at Edinboro to record his third major of the season as he upped his record to 14-4.
