The San Francisco 49ers should take nothing less than a king’s ransom type of offer for Deebo Samuel. Here are 3 proposals they should accept.
If the San Francisco 49ers are going to trade wide receiver Deebo Samuel, it will be before the 2022 NFL Draft according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.
Meanwhile, 49ers general manager John Lynch said he can’t envision a scenario in which the 49ers would let Samuel go.
Samuel doesn’t want to be with the 49ers anymore and the 49ers could get outstanding value in return for him. They have no obligation to trade him, however, and could hold out for the best possible deal.
Because he’s younger, Samuel could theoretically land the 49ers more than the Kansas City Chiefs got from the Miami Dolphins for Tyreek Hill (five picks: 29th overall, 50th overall, 121st overall, multiple 2023 picks).
What type of offer would be too good to pass up for John Lynch and the 49ers? Let’s look at three.
Deebo Samuel trade to accept no. 1: New York Jets
49ers receive:
- 10th pick
- 38th pick
Jets receive:
- WR Deebo Samuel
- 93rd pick
The Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t pry the 10th overall pick away from the New York Jets in the Tyreek Hill discussions, and perhaps finishing in second place in those negotiations will prompt them to up the offer for Tyreek Hill.
Part of the Hill trade that complicates translatability here is that the Chiefs were motivated to move him. The 49ers have no such motivation to trade Samuel.
Trading picks 10 and 38 would be a hefty price to pay, which is why the Jets would also be getting a 3rd-rounder back in return, but if you are trying to acquire a star player like this, you’ve got to pay a star player price.
The 10th overall pick in this year’s draft could be used on a receiver on a rookie deal, and people always love to argue injury history as a reason not to spend a premium pick on Deebo Samuel in a trade, but those same people turn around and project Jameson Williams or Drake London to the Jets in mock drafts.
Funny how that works, isn’t it?
The Jets and 49ers have an obvious relationship and Samuel would get his wish by getting out of San Francisco. The 49ers would replace the premium picks they lost in last year’s Trey Lance trade.
If the Jets feel like Samuel is a building block, there’s no doubt they should be willing to pay up. They would still have the 4th and 36th picks in this scenario as well.
Now isn’t the time to get stingy with Zach Wilson’s future hanging in the balance.
