Motus Theater is continuing its efforts to use theater as a tool for sparking conversation about immigration and other issues of national importance.
At 6 p.m. Thursday, the nonprofit theater will begin a new series called “UndocuMonologues,” another iteration of its original “UndocuAmerica” project. Reps. Joe Neguse and Jason Crow will be reading parts of a monologue written by Juan Juarez, an undocumented immigrant born in Mexico. Two other monologues will be read by the monologists.
There will be time for reflection, and each monologue will be followed by music from Uruguayan musician Elisa Garcia to “help people settle into their bodies and really process the emotions of hearing some of these stories,” Tania Chairez said. Chairez is the national outreach and education director at Motus as well an undocumented immigrant born in Mexico.
In Chairez’s mind, the virtual event is the perfect opportunity for prominent people to step into another’s shoes for the night.
“We truly hope to uplift the stories of undocumented people, particularly at a pivotal time in this nation,” she said.
It’s particularly meaningful since the stories are ones shared willingly by those with lived experience, Chairez said..
“They’re not making anything up about us. They’re reading a story that we gifted to them for that particular moment,” she said.
Juarez, whose story will be read by Neguse and Crow, expressed similar sentiments in a statement provided by Motus.
“All of us who are telling our stories as part of the ‘UndocuAmerica’ project are undocumented or individuals protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program,” Juarez said. “What we want is for people to understand, to put themselves in our shoes. Our representatives and neighbors need to know the impact of immigration policies on undocumented people in our country.”
The evening will conclude with a question-and-answer segment with the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition.
For more information or to register for the Zoom event, visit motustheater.org/events/2021/1/7/undocumonologues. The event is free, but Motus pays the monologists and will be accepting donations.
