Birch Creek Studio Sessions Share Knowledge, Insights - Door County Pulse

Each Saturday morning in April, members of Birch Creek’s renowned Big Band Jazz faculty will share their musical expertise during one-hour, online studio sessions that are open to young music students, experienced amateurs and professional performing artists. These Zoom sessions offer a special opportunity to interact with and gain a wealth of knowledge and insights from some of the country’s finest music artists and educators

Larry Brown Jr. will begin the April sessions with Rhythm Guitar: The Heartbeat of the Band on April 3, 11 am. He’ll discuss and demonstrate the many musical hats that a rhythm guitarist wears.

On April 10, 11 am, Clarence Hines will present Jazz Concepts for Brass, during which the trombonist will focus on concepts in jazz improvisation and how to develop a good feel for sound and time. Michael Stryker will offer Improvising at the Piano on April 17, 11 am, to help participants understand the piano as a percussion, chordal and melodic instrument all in one.

Trombonist Tom Garling will offer the final session April 24, 11 am – The Jazz Ear: Making the Leap from Theory to Listening to Playing Your Instrument – to teach participants how to develop their ears and to connect what they know with what they hear in music.
