"It's my first picture book," López said. "My goal with the book was to introduce young people to her."

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Twenty-six years ago today, the famed Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla was murdered by the president of her own fan club.

A University of Houston-Victoria professor wrote a children’s book to share Selena’s story with today’s youth.

On March 31, 1995, Selena Quintanilla’s tragic death left the world a little dimmer without her superstar shine, which continues to serve as an inspiration to not only Latinas but to all young artists out there.

Diana López, a UHV professor, wants to help share Quintanilla’s story with young children with her new picture book called “Sing with me: The story of Selena Quintanilla.”

“It’s my first picture book,” López said. “My goal with the book was to introduce young people to her.”

Her book is set for release on July 6, 2021, and it will also be available in Spanish.

López also penned a novel adaptation of a Disney Pixar film, called “Coco: A Story about Music, Shoes, and Family.”

“I visit schools in Corpus Christi and the Victoria area and the Valley, San Antonio and I’ll see first-graders, kindergarteners, they’ll have a Selena T-shirt, she died long before they were born, probably when their parents were really young,” López said. “And yet her presence is still really strong and she’s still loved but I thought, ‘Do they know her story, really?'”

For those who haven’t had the chance to learn of the singer’s story, season one of Selena is waiting for you on Netflix
