Bennett’s Books has launched the Sylvantide Plant Swap, a “Leaf a Plant, Take a Plant” station open to the community. Perhaps the first of its kind in the state, the project is designed to help bring people together through the love of plants.
According to Colin Bennett, founder and owner of the bookstore, “the idea for this project, in addition to our Little Free Pantry, Freedge, and other community service is to be a beacon of hope in these trying times. Since a lot of people really love plants, we think this will be a popular service that fosters relationships.”
The plant share is located outside the back of the bookstore (at 171 Main Street in Deep River) and is accessible during the day, seven days a week. According to Bennett, their team is working on propagating dozens of plants to share, but the project is supposed to be truly by-and-for the community with a “leave what you can, take what you need” ethos.
“The whole point of the bookstore is to help the community so this is exactly in line with our mission,” Bennett said.
The shelf being used was built by 7th graders Emma Abramson and Anahi Matute of John Winthrop Middle School.
Technology education teacher Jenn Blalock said the students, “designed, cut, and assembled the plant stand to donate to the bookstore as part of their technology education course. Both girls came in with zero experience and faced designing challenges along the way but are pleased with their final project.”
The bookstore team monitors the shelf but is also potentially looking for volunteers. Bennett encourages anyone who wants to help with this endeavor to stop by the store.
Several other projects are in the works designed to help the community. Starting in April, the bookstore plans to host in-person plant swap days where people can come and share plants.
In addition to the plant share, the bookstore hosts and maintains a Freedge, one of the only community refrigerators in the state, and also has a Little Free Pantry. The pantry and Freedge are located outside the bookstore and are accessible 24 hours a day. The pantry contains non-perishable food items like pasta, rice, and beans, as well as cereal, canned vegetables, and snacks. Additionally, the pantry also contains a variety of toiletries and in the colder months, hats, gloves and socks.
“Anyone in need can stop by at any time and pick up some items,” Bennett said, noting that the bookstore tries to keep the pantry and refrigerator stocked but he encourages others to donate items to it as well. “The pantry and Freedge are always accessible so anyone can stop by at any time to put some food or other items in it.”
