SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- As part of NJ Local Government Week, Mayor Josh Losardo, members of the Township Council, as well as municipal administration and emergency responders, hosted a Business & Economic Development Roundtable with local business owners on Tuesday morning.

The purpose was to provide an update on downtown redevelopment and further strengthen the ties between the Township and the local business community. Town officials discussed the ongoing plans for redevelopment in the downtown as well as other economic development priorities during a casual, hour-long event on the outdoor patio of the Stage House Tavern.

Downtown redevelopment requires close communication between government and businesses, as portions of Park Avenue, East Second Street, Front Street, and Bartle Avenue will undergo significant revitalization. All agreed during the roundtable that communication with local businesses is key.

Police Chief Ted Conley said the Township will work with businesses to develop traffic improvement plans to manage traffic flow as redevelopment gets underway. Redevelopment Coordinator Tom Strowe welcomed business owners to share their ideas with the Downtown Redevelopment Committee. Meanwhile, Mayor Losardo said this is the ideal time for more residents with planning, construction, or development experience to fill vacancies on the land use boards, as redevelopment plans will be reviewed by these board and presented for public review.

“The goal of Scotch Plains is to be as supportive as possible for the business community,” Losardo said. “We are ending any red tape. We want to make it as easy as possible for businesses to thrive in our commercial corridors and find new ways to serve our residents.”

Local business owners – many of whom have served Scotch Plains for decades – all rose and spoke. Each provided introductions about what their businesses do and voiced support for the overall business climate in Scotch Plains, nurtured, in part, by a proactive municipal government.
