Petoskey city council is trying to decide whether or not to accept a $42,000 donation from Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party Ron Weiser.
This comes following comments he made about Governor Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, calling them witches. Weiser has since apologized for those comments.
“Mr. Weiser called me two nights ago and acknowledged or let know that he had made a public apology to those defamation of character and comments about the governor and the others,” said John Murphy, Petoskey Mayor. “He said he misspoke a
nd apologized for it and said he shouldn’t have said that in public.”
However, one council member Kate Marshall is still firmly against accepting the donation. They were set to vote on the issue last month, but decided to postpone due to there being only four members available. “I feel something that is as controversial as this, I think it’s good to have a five person vote and I’m not afraid to pull the trigger and vote up or down on this matter when it comes down to it,” said Murphy.
Mayor Murphy has not yet decided which way he’s leaning. “I feel it’s only fair for me to listen to both sides,” he said. “It’s only fair for me to look out for what’s best for the city of Petoskey. What’s best for us, not getting into the left wing, right wing garbage that’s going on right now in the world.”
With the donations the department would be able to purchase new equipment, like body cams. Council will vote on whether to accept the donation May 3. Weiser declined to comment at this time.
