Los Altos residents are “doing a great job” in the fight against COVID-19, the deputy city manager reported to the city council last week.

Jon Maginot told council members April 27 the city has “responded admirably” to the need for social distancing and mask wearing, reflected in the relatively low numbers of COVID-19 cases and the high numbers of vaccinations.
A review of the seven U.S. Census tracts in Los Altos reveals that the city totaled 636 reported cases of COVID since the pandemic began. In addition, Maginot said 82% of Los Altos residents ages 16 and older have had at least one dose of a vaccine.

“We have continually done a great job of keeping the community safe,” he said. “But we’re not done yet. … We’ve run 26.1 miles (of a 26.2-mile marathon). It would be a shame to stop now. The finish line is there. We can see it. We’ve just got to get to it.”

The latest statistics from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department present an even rosier profile for Los Altos. Data as of Friday showed 23,615 of 25,372 residents identified as 16 and older receiving at least one dose, just over 93%. In Los Altos Hills, 4,758 of 6,911 residents 16 and older have received at least one dose (68.8%). In Mountain View, 48,642 of 66,878 (72.7%) of those 16 and older have received at least one shot.

While more than two-thirds of Santa Clara County residents over age 16 have received at least one shot, county health officials expressed concern at a press conference Friday over the recent reduction in vaccine demand. They urged people to continue getting vaccinated “to save lives, prevent the spread of dangerous variants and help the community emerge from the pandemic.”

In particular, county officials urged youth and young adults to get vaccinated as soon as possible, with residents ages 18-29 making up the highest number of the unvaccinated. Young adults ages 18-34 have the highest rate of COVID infection of any age group.

“People are still getting sick from COVID,” said Dr. Marty Fenstersheib, the county’s COVID-19 testing and vaccine officer. “We are seeing nearly 100 new cases every day, still.”
