Less than half of Americans are confident that Republican state officials will accept the results of elections if their party loses, according to a new poll.
The Washington Post-University of Maryland poll asked voters a flurry of questions about their confidence in democracy ahead of the midterms, which will be held in November.
Only 13 percent of respondents overall said they are "very" confident that Republican state officials will accept the results if their party loses, while 35 percent said they are "somewhat" confident, according to the poll. Meanwhile, 33 percent said they are "not too confident" and 17 percent of respondents said they are "not confident at all."
When it comes to Democratic state officials, voters said they were more sure they would accept election losses if their party loses. Thirty percent said they were very confident they would accept losing results, while 37 percent said they were somewhat confident.
Twenty percent of respondents said they were "not too confident" Democrats would accept losing results, while only 12 percent said they were "not confident at all."
Overall, 64 percent of respondents said they are confident—while 36 percent said they are not—that votes across the country will be counted correctly during the midterms. Similarly, 65 percent said all eligible citizens in the U.S. will have a "fair opportunity to vote," while 34 percent said they are worried that some may face roadblocks to voting, according to the poll.
Following the 2020 presidential election, some cast doubt on the election results, buying into the unproven claims pushed by former President Donald Trump and his allies that widespread election fraud is why President Joe Biden won.
In some battleground states led by Republicans, officials pushed for and conducted election audits—with critics accusing them of trying to overturn the election results. Some Republicans in Congress also voted against certifying the results on January 6, citing fraud.
Still, most respondents believe Biden was legitimately elected president, according to the poll. Only 29 percent said they do not believe he was legitimately elected, while 69 percent said he was. Sixty-eight percent of respondents also rejected the claims of voter fraud, while 30 percent said they feel there is solid evidence of fraud.
Most also blame the former president for the January 6 riot. Forty-three percent said he bears a great deal of responsibility, while 17 percent said he bears a good amount of it.
Fourteen percent of respondents said he bears just some, while 24 percents said he bears no responsibility at all, according to the poll.
The poll surveyed 1,101 U.S. adults from December 17 to December 19, carrying a margin of error of plus or minus four points.
A CBS News-YouGov poll released Sunday, meanwhile, found that more than half of Republicans believe the Capitol rioters were "defending freedom" on January 6, while 85 percent of Democrats said they were "trying to overthrow government."
