CHELSEA – The city of Chelsea is accepting bids for residential garbage pickup and curbside recycling services.

The Chelsea City Council in a June 16 meeting approved a resolution to advertise for bids for citywide garbage and recycling pickup.

“Our current contract with Republic Services expires at the end of August, so we will be putting our garbage and curbside recycling service out for bid,” Mayor Tony Picklesimer said.

According to the resolution, the city “desires to receive bids for the efficient, healthful and aesthetic operation of collection, hauling and disposal of non-hazardous and non-infectious solid waste for all residents within the corporate limits of Chelsea,” as well as “residential curbside recycling available for the residents within the corporate limits of Chelsea.”

The council also approved a resolution to accept the lowest bid for the Chelsea Business Park grading and storm drainage project from Evergreen Erosion Soil LLC, and another resolution to support the 2020 Back to School Sales Tax Weekend on July 17-19.

In addition, the council approved three proposed ordinances for annexations on Chelsea Road (1.01 acres) and Brasher Drive (two 5-acre parcels).

Picklesimer said one of the parcels on Brasher Drive bordered Chelsea and Pelham, making two separate ordinances necessary to complete the annexation process for both parcels, which have the same owners.

The council heard a first reading of a proposed ordinance to establish parking restrictions.

Other updates shared during the meeting included the following:

  • Chelsea Youth Baseball’s opening night was June 15. Games will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays through mid-July.
  • Plans are set for this year’s Chelsea Fest and The Big Kaboom on Saturday, June 27 in the field behind Dairy Queen. The event will feature food from local vendors, live music and a fireworks show.
  • The Chelsea Public Library’s virtual summer reading program is underway. The movie Frozen II will be shown at the Chelsea Community Center on Tuesday, June 23.
  • An open house at Chelsea’s new fire station is tentatively set for July 18.
  • Chelsea City Hall will be closed Friday, July 3 in observance of the Fourth of July holiday.
  • The next council meetings will be held July 7 and July 21.
