LEESBURG, VA — The Loudoun County School Board is planning to accept public comment at its meeting Monday on a proposal to direct LCPS to select a new mascot for Loudoun County High School. Since 1954, the LCHS nickname has been Raiders, which is a reference to a Confederate Army unit led by John Mosby from the American Civil War known as Mosby's Raiders.

The public can comment on the proposed removal of the name at the beginning of Monday's remote meeting, which starts at 4 p.m. Speakers who wish to comment at the meeting can register online on the main School Board website until 3 p.m. Monday or by calling 571-252-1030 during regular business hours.

The focus on Loudoun County High School's nickname is part of a growing national debate on Confederate statues and monuments and whether they should be removed. Across the South, the conversation also includes schools that are named after Confederate generals, slave owners and segregationists.

Two weeks ago, School Board member Ian Serotkin (Blue Ridge) asked Loudoun public school administrators whether any of Loudoun County's schools had names linked to the Confederacy. School officials found that no schools were named after people associated with the Confederacy. They found that only Loudoun County High School's mascot was named after the Confederate band of soldiers known as Mosby's Raiders.

At a Loudoun County School Board meeting on Tuesday, board members agreed to vote Monday, June 29 on whether to change Loudoun County High School's nickname from Raiders to a name not associated with the confederacy. Col. John Mosby's unit, known as Mosby's Raiders, was famous for their guerrilla strikes on Union forces.

If the school board votes to remove Raiders as LCHS's nickname, the school's principal and administrators would implement a process to work with the LCHS community to select a new nickname for the high school. School administration would provide more details about the renaming process if the school board approves the proposal to remove the name.

At Tuesday's meeting, Loudoun County Public Schools Superintendent Eric Williams proposed the renaming of the school mascot as part of a presentation. His presentation summarized the school system's plan to combat systemic racism. At the meeting, a majority of board members indicated they were in favor of removing the school's nickname.

Loudoun County High School, located in Leesburg, was founded in 1954. It has an enrollment of about 1,500 students.
