LEXINGTON, Va. –Virginia Military Institute head women's water polo coach Ryan Pryor resigned his post Tuesday to accept the head coaching position at Augustana College (Ill.).

"I will always be grateful for the opportunity I've had to lead this program for the past six years," said Pryor. "I'm very proud of what that team has accomplished and, most importantly, I will always value the relationships I formed with the cadet-athletes.  VMI is an incredible place and I am thankful for the chance to be a part of that community."

Pryor finished his sixth season at VMI, arriving at the Institute in September of 2014. The team completed its ninth year of existence in 2020 and attained one of the most successful seasons in program history.

The VMI women's water polo team had a record-breaking 2020 campaign before it was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Keydets finished the year 12-1 with a program-record nine-game winning streak. VMI swept all four of their matches at both the Washington & Jefferson University and Grove City College Invitationals, and took three of four at the Mercyhurst Invite. Senior goalie Issi French earned an honorable mention to the All-American team at season's end.

Pryor led the Keydets to four-straight winning seasons and three consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament berths. He earned the Institute's Nathaniel W. Pendleton award for excellence in coaching in 2017 and was named the 2017 MAAC Coach of the Year.

"VMI is very grateful for Ryan's leadership of our water polo program," said VMI Director of Athletics Dr. Dave Diles. "He has worked extremely hard to advance our program and we wish him, and his family, the very best as they transition to this new opportunity.  As we begin a search for the next head coach, we understand that water polo has been a perfect fit into the intercollegiate sports offerings of the Institute and it will clearly attract a very strong collection of candidates.  Our current team and those that came before created a great foundation."
