Legends of Notre Dame and the newly renovated Rohr’s at the Morris Inn are now accepting flex points as valid payment for orders at both locations. Both restaurants made their respective decisions before the start of the school year with the hopes that it would usher in more student engagement.

Jessica Reno, the director of food and beverage at the Morris Inn and Notre Dame Conference Center, met with student ambassadors shortly after joining the University to discuss the possibility of accepting flex points.

“[The student ambassadors] pretty resoundingly said that it was the issue and would be a huge benefit to the students and to Rohr’s,” Reno said. “So I immediately started digging at that point and found out that it was feasible, and so we moved forward.”

For Rohr’s, which opened on July 27 following renovations, the switch to accept flex points comes during an effort to reimagine itself. The Morris Inn previously contained two restaurants, Rohr’s and Sorin’s. However, Sorin’s closed last November and was annexed by Rohr’s.

Legends of Notre Dame has recently begun accepting Flex Points.

Reno said that the restaurant’s goal was to “reopen ourselves in a way that was fun and engaging.”

The restaurant implemented the Grubhub system ahead of the beginning of the semester, which has led to an increase in student orders. Combined with more outdoor seating, the switch to accept flex points has provided Rohr’s with more opportunities to serve their customers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It was definitely a great time to capitalize on what we have here,” Reno said. “It’s such a draw in more metropolitan dining areas to have an outside dining spot, and so for all these students coming to South Bend from all over the country, these are the kinds of things they’re looking for.”

Legends, the restaurant located just 100 yards south of Notre Dame Stadium, also decided to accept flex points ahead of the start of the semester.

Kat Lyvers, the general manager at Legends, stated that the decision was an attempt to draw in more student business.

“Traditionally, students have not been a huge part of our guest pool,” Lyvers said. “We don’t often see them in the restaurant, so we just wanted to try to reach out.”

Decorated with Notre Dame sports memorabilia, Legends has operated as a full-service restaurant known for pub food since 2003. However, following the adoption of Grubhub and flex points, Lyvers has already noticed a boost in student engagement.

“[Grubhub] has definitely enabled us to reach out to the students,” she said. “I think we’ve definitely gained some new fans and that’s what we were hoping to accomplish.”

As restaurants have had to adapt to limited dine-in availability during the pandemic, Lyvers said that she is pleased with the timing at which Legends decided to accept flex points and implement the on-campus Grubhub program.

“I think if there is even a remote silver lining to this, it’s that we made these decisions in the timing that we did, so that we are able to still serve the students and be open in some capacity,” she said.

Both restaurants plan to continue these changes to their ordering and payment systems in the future.

“My intention is [to accept flex points] from here on out, forevermore,” Lyvers said. “So that we can continue to build the student base and that it’s not a question anymore.”
