School is back in session Monday for Collier and Lee county school districts, and while schools will be open for face-to-face learning, roughly half of students will be learning from home. And that means emergency responders need to take special care when approaching residences.
The North Collier Fire Control and Rescue District and the Collier County Sheriff's Office released a public service announcement video Friday on how students can stay safe while learning virtually.
And NCFR has their front-line personnel maintaining heightened situational awareness when responding to emergencies, especially to residential properties where children may be alone, according to an NCFR news release.
In the video, officials discuss different safety issues that students and families should be aware of while students are home alone, such as cooking and using kitchen appliances, answering the phone and answering the door.
In the case of a structure fire, children tend to hide when they are scared, which makes crews' initial search of a residence even more important.
"Firefighter training includes accessing various cues such as parked cars in the driveway to determine if a residence is occupied. NCFR recognizes that this is not sufficient in the age of virtual learning," the release states.

As far as responding to calls, Katie Heck, public relations officer with Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District, said, "We always treat a fire alarm as a live fire until we confirm it’s not. The firefighters will definitely be more aware that children could be inside or in the nearby area when arriving on scenes."
They also warn that children who are home alone have an increased likelihood of illness or injury because unsupervised children may be more adventurous.
Both districts gave parents and guardians back-to-school options which include virtual learning from home.
About 40% of registered students in Collier County School District chose an online or virtual learning model for this school year.
Of Collier's 48,000 students, 14,359 chose Classroom Connect, 2,455 chose eCollier Academy and 180 chose home education.
By the way: How many students selected to return to your child's school?
In Lee County School District, a little more than 50% of students opted not to return to face-to-face learning.
Of nearly 85,000 students in Lee County School District, 33,425 students are enrolled in Lee Home Connect, 8,773 students are enrolled in Lee Virtual School and 2,818 students are enrolled in parent-led home schooling.
