LINCOLN SQUARE — A Lincoln Square pet food pantry is asking pet owners to share photos of their dogs Wednesday to help raise money for struggling families with furry friends.
Wednesday is National Dog Day and an anonymous donor has pledged to give $1 to the Lincoln Square Friendship Center’s pet food pantry for each person who uploads a photo of their pet to Facebook.
The donor has pledged to give up to $1,000 and pet owners are being asked to tag the food pantry’s Facebook page to have their photo counted towards the goal.
Pantry volunteers also plan to visit dog parks Wednesday to fundraise for the pet pantry.
“Sadly, one of the first things to go when finances get tight is the family pet,” said Dara Salk, a volunteer and cofounder of the pet pantry. “It breaks our hearts as tough times are when families need their companion animals more than ever.”
Ross Outten, director of development for the Friendship Center, says he’s seen a 20 percent increase in the need for pet food during the pandemic. For example, so far in August the pantry helped feed 111 dogs and 159 cats.
The pantry also launched a Facebook fundraiser Tuesday with the goal of raising $2,020 to help families keep their furry friends well fed.
