HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - After a tragic accident in Hastings took the lives of two teens last week, law enforcement and truckers shared ways people can be safer out on the road when at stop signs and signals.

Driving through Hastings or on the surrounding highways there are times where people don't fully stop for stop signs or lights. Some areas of town are seeing some accidents as a result. Hastings Police give out around 100 citations for it a year but they aren't always around to catch every one.

“I think a lot of the violations of stop signs are just people being in a hurry and thinking they have the time to get out into traffic,” Captain Mike Doremus said. “Or they see a car coming and they think they have an opportunity to get out there safely which sometimes they just don’t.”

Police said some of the problem areas in town include 7th St and Baltimore Ave, Elm Ave and D St, and 12th and Elm Ave.

This issue can be a big problem for truckers. When hauling 80,000 lbs, people tend to want to get ahead of them since they are going slower speeds.

“It’s our office, it’s where we work out there and it’s a needed industry to have trucks on the road to transport these products and be able to have the products in the stores that everybody buys,” said Dwight Dunsworth, Vice President of Bernard Pavelka Trucking. “We have to always be aware of these trucks that are operating at different speeds and with a lot more weight.”

Dunsworth said it is becoming more common for people to not wait and make the stop. Trucks aren’t able to swerve or stop very quickly to avoid them.

“The few minutes they’re trying to save could cost them their lives possibly or cause an accident that’s going to cost them more time than it would if they had waited the minute or two it takes for that truck to pass,” Dunsworth said.

Truckers ask that people do come to a complete stop and fully gauge how fast a truck may be approaching. Bernard Pavelka Trucking receives awards consistently for their safe driving.

“We try to put out newsletters each month that pertain to different things that deal with safety and making drivers conscious and aware of some of the hazards of traveling the highway,” Dunsworth said.

While they are mindful of the hazards, they urge people in smaller cars to have patience.
