+ Subscribe to this podcastLa Mesa residents who live in single-family homes will be able to divert their food waste from the landfill, starting on April 1.
Residents will put the food waste in their green bins and it will be processed at EDCO's new anaerobic digestion facility in Escondido. Microorganisms, along with heat, convert the material to natural gas and fertilizer.
The service will be expanded to apartments and businesses over the summer.
Diverting food waste from the landfill leads to less methane, a greenhouse gas, being released into the atmosphere.
I Love a Clean San Diego is holding a webinar at 4 p.m. Thursday on how anaerobic digestion works. More information can be found at cleansd.org.
