HARRISBURG (WBNG) -- Pennsylvania is urging farmers markets to accept SNAP benefits in an effort to provide to more customers while also helping give low-income families healthy, local produce.
The Department of Human Services along with the Department of Agriculture made the announcement Thursday.
Human Services Secretary Theresa Miller said the push will benefit both parties involved. "It helps individuals and families stretch their budgets, reduces the burden on local charitable food networks, and supports local retailers and grocers,” she said.
Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said that all it takes is clearance from farmers' markets.
"Yes to everyone having access to produce and products. Yes to equal access to healthy foods. Yes to more customers, and importantly, yes to free, wireless, EBT processing equipment," Redding said.
