Despite the COVID-19 vaccinations of more than 1.2 million British Columbians, the province is not out of the woods yet, and BC’s provincial health officer warns it could get worse as new cases appear daily.
During a news conference Thursday afternoon, Dr. Bonnie Henry said another 1,205 people tested positive for COVID-19, boosting the number of active cases to 10,052.
Those figures represent the highest number of hospitalizations and ICU patients the province has so far documented since the pandemic began.
“Of the active cases, 397 individuals are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, 120 of whom are in intensive care,” said Henry, who noted the remaining people with COVID-19 are recovering at home in self-isolation.
“Since we last reported, we have had 341 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 632 new cases in the Fraser Health region, 64 in the Island Health region, 105 in the Interior Health region, 26 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.”
The current number of active cases is the most seen by BC, with the former record at 10,039, as noted Dec. 14.
Henry said the province experienced announced three more COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the total number to 1,524.
A little more than 16,000 people in the province are currently under public health monitoring, Henry said, noting there were no reports of new outbreaks in health-care facilities.
Henry, who, along with Health Minister Adrian Dix, shared the latest modelling data that provided details that show how the disease is spreading across BC.
According to the model, B.C. could soon see as many as 2,000 cases a day if contacts don’t decrease.
However, the news wasn’t all bad and Henry noted deaths caused by the virus have declined.
Henry said she was encouraged by the slow down.
“It’s a testament to how well vaccines are working,” she said.
“We strongly encourage everyone who is now eligible for a vaccine to arrange for your appointment today. This not only protects you, but also provides greater protection to everyone around you.
“Always using our layers of protection, combined with getting one of the safe and highly effective vaccines as soon as you are eligible, is the best way to stop the spread of COVID-19 in our communities.”
So far, Henry said, 1,235,863 jabs have been delivered, with 1,147,964 of those being a first dose.
There are about 4.3 million people living in BC.
