PARKERSBURG — Encouraging people to share their faith is the focus of the 53rd Missions Conference today, Saturday and Sunday in Parkersburg.
For 53 years, Christ United Methodist Church and during the last 15 years St. Andrews and other United Methodist churches have hosted missionaries from five continents. The goal is to excite Christians about what God is doing in the world and raise support for over 30 missionaries.
“Share Your Faith,” this year’s special seminar, will focus on two mission efforts in the United States.
Harry and Lydia Boekell, state director of child evangelism fellowship, will share at 6:30 p.m. today at Christ United Methodist at 16th Street and St. Marys Avenue. They will share a video about the ministry to reach children in the Little Kanawha area. After school Good News Clubs and summer 5 Day Clubs, which are being planned for this summer encourage children to understand the love of Jesus for them.
Immediately following that presentation, the second ministry is for college students. Joe Shea, an engineer turned missionary and recently pastor in Massachusetts, will be the keynote speaker. He will challenge Christians to carry out the conference theme, Share Your Faith. The Friday program will include music by Charesse Rutherford and the New Creation singers.
The featured event is a two-hour seminar, “Share Your Faith,” presented by Shea.
Often times Christians hesitate to share their faith for fear of offending or because they just don’t know what to say. Shea will teach participants how to discover a person’s world view or ethical and belief system that needs to be understood so that eventually Jesus becomes relevant to them and a virtue based ethical system can result.
This is a concept that is rarely taught and will be helpful to anyone who wants to learn practical, non-judgmental ways to share their faith.
The seminar will be from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Saturday. Lunch will be served at noon.
Every effort to create social-distanced learning and sanitized surroundings is being made. Masks are required.
To reserve a space for the seminar or lunch, call 304-863-3424.
A joint worship service by Christ United and St. Andrews United Methodist churches will be held 10:30 a.m. Sunday. In addition to Shea sharing his ministry with college students, United Methodist Bishop Sandra Steiner Ball will give the challenge to Share Your Faith.
All of the weekend events are open to the public. Registration is required.
