Over 50 residents attended a town hall Thursday evening, Aug. 19, at Ganesha Park to voice their concerns about a used-car dealer’s proposal to establish a distribution and processing center at Fairplex in Pomona.
The meeting, hosted by Councilmember Robert Torres, took place a day after the city of Pomona announced it came to an agreement with Carvana to cease all of the company’s activity at Fairplex within 120 days. The company had been transporting and storing vehicles at Fairplex since March, the city said.
Torres told those in attendance that the city delivered a cease-and-desist letter to Carvana two weeks ago after residents began voicing their complaints and petitioning against the company’s operations at Fairplex.
Many in attendance Thursday were Pomona and La Verne residents who submitted complaints to the city about the noise and traffic pollution caused by large transport trucks, as well as loud music being played by Carvana employees in the early morning hours.
“My windows shake my house and now I have stucco damage around my windows,” said Pomona resident Randall Sanchez. “I’ve lived here for 28 years and we all have put up with all the stuff around the county fair but this Carvana stuff is not acceptable.”
Plans had been announced for a Carvana distribution and processing center at Fairplex, which is owned by Los Angeles County but operated by the Los Angeles County Fair Association. The proposal called for a 200,000-square-foot warehouse on 85 acres near Fairplex’s Gate 9 as well as a storage room for 7,000 vehicles and space for 450 on-site parking spots. Under the proposal, more than 2,600 vehicle trips would be generated on weekdays, officials said.
It was unclear where those plans stood late Thursday.
Torres advised residents to contact Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda Solis to inform her about the issues the Carvana project would cause in the community. Signs that read “No Carvana” were distributed after the meeting for people to spread awareness about the potential project.
“We’d like to create that visibility in the community and we’d like to keep raising awareness,” Torres said. “We want to build our audience and when this comes to the City Council, we’re going to pack those chambers.”
