Corrections and Clarifications: This story was updated Friday to correct that 2020 Scholar-Athlete of the Year winner Jacob Johnston will be attending the U.S. Naval Academy.

Scholar-Athlete of the Year award winners Jacob Johnston and Ashley Davies had to wait longer than past recipients to receive their scholarship money and plaques due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday, Johnston and Davies accepted their scholarships during a special Rotary Club of Redding luncheon at C.R. Gibbs American Grille.

The awards are sponsored by the Rotary Club of Redding, the Seamans Family Foundation and the Record Searchlight. Each year, the finalists and the top girl and boy winners are awarded scholarship money.

Johnston graduated last week from West Valley High School in Cottonwood, while Ashley Davies graduated from Burney High School. They were each voted the 2020 Scholar-Athlete winners by a panel of judges from the Record Searchlight and a voting committee from the Rotary Club of Redding based on outstanding achievement in academics, athletics and service to their respective communities.

Each received a $1,500 scholarship.

"A lot of it is just real hard work and planning each day ahead of time," Johnston said. "On the weekends, I kept pretty busy because I like to stay busy."

Johnston will attend the U.S. Naval Academy. Johnston had been on a wait list to attend the Naval Academy and had previously accepted an offer to attend University of California, San Diego on a Reserve Officer Training Corp scholarship.

Johnston was taken off the wait and accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy on June 10.

"I've just always liked helping people and it makes me feel good," Johnston said. "I'm not just being selfish, and I want to help others have as good of a life as I've had."

Davies, like Johnston, will also attend school in San Diego and will be a two-sport athlete for San Diego City College. During the fall, Davies will play indoor volleyball and then play beach volleyball in the spring.

"My parents have a great work ethic and I took that from them," Davies said. "I'm very grateful for that because they get things done when they need to get done, just like I do."
