2021 Houston Open final round preview

We’ve had a rotating cast of recognizable names lurking near the top of the leaderboard through three rounds of play at the 2021 Houston Open, and also some underdogs (Martin Trainer, anyone?). Currently, Scottie Scheffler rests atop the heap at 7 under par, holding a one-stroke lead over the field after a Saturday 69.

The 25-year-old Texas native (and Ryder Cup phenomenon) vaulted himself into contention after a Friday 62 in Houston, helping to rally past a group headlined by Matthew Wolff ahead of him on the leaderboard. To this point in his career, Scheffler has seen an extraordinary amount of success (including top-10 finishes in three of the four majors), and yet, he’s still in search of his first-ever PGA Tour win. A victory on Sunday would give him a fitting win in front of his home state’s crowd.

Further back, Matthew Wolff enters Sunday lurking just one back of Scheffler’s lead. Wolff is looking for his second-career PGA Tour victory, and his first since winning the 3M Open in June 2019, his rookie year. Wolff has been through a roller-coaster few years since that famed first win, but his game is rounding nicely into form after a middle-of-the-night swing revelation resulted in increased consistency.
