San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt will return for his 12th season with the club, as he accepted the $18.4 million qualifying offer, according to multiple reports. The deadline to accept or deny a qualifying offer was Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET.
Belt, 33, was the only one of 14 free agents who were tendered the qualifying offer to accept prior to the deadline. He and the Giants still have the option to negotiate a longer-term deal if desired.
Belt only played in 97 games in 2021 due to multiple injuries, including a fractured hand that kept him out of the postseason. But he's always been someone with outstanding command of the strike zone as a hitter and his offensive numbers took off under the Giants' current coaching regime. Belt's OPS+ over 51 games in the shortened 2020 season was 177, and he had a 160 OPS+ in a 2021 campaign where he hit a career-high 29 home runs.
